Today's project idea was originated because I needed a solution to a problem.
The problem at hand: ugly magnets.
Yes! Ugly Magnets!
{Are you laughing at me yet?!}
Each day, my daughter brings home a file folder of papers from her school...once I weed through them and snatch out the ones that I need to keep, they always make their way to the front of our refrigerator door so we don't miss any upcoming events or school news. They are put up there with the other things we display...kids' artwork, important papers, grocery lists, etc. etc. I'm sure that many of you can relate!
The problem was...I had horrific magnets! I don't like magnets. I think that they are ugly. I know...I'm very strange in that way! I like simple magnets, small magnets, cute magnets. The problem with that is...the small, cute ones are never powerful enough to hold up all the papers and other items I have to hang on the fridge. So this week I tossed all of my ugly magnets into the garbage and needed a solution.
While I was browsing the aisles of my local craft store...I came across mini wooden spools.
My own spools began to turn and I found my magnet solution!
Here's what you'll need to make your own:
Supplies:
basic craft glue, scissors, The Twinery's Colorful Bunch Sampler Pack, mini wooden spools (mine were smaller than 1" tall), small strong magnets (I found mine at my local craft store, but I also found them on Amazon), and your hot glue gun.
With just a few simple steps, you'll have an adorable set of mini spool magnets for your own refrigerator or craft room too!
Steps 1 and 2: Apply craft glue to the wooden spools, completely cover the entire "inset" portion of the spools with glue. You'll only need a light layer of glue...there's no need to pour it on, it'll only make a mess that way!
Step 3 and 4: Gently wrap the twine around each spool in a single layer. Don't pull the twine tight or else it just won't look right. Just lightly wrap the spool until it's completely wrapped in twine.
Steps 5 and 6: Once the twine is wrapped around the spools, you can hot glue a small strong magnet to each spool to create the finished mini spool magnet!
Viola!
Just a few tips: Due to the weight of the spool magnets, only the small strong magnets will work in order to make them usable. Other craft magnets are not strong enough to hold the weight of the spools plus use them to secure items to your refrigerator.
I hope you enjoy making your own Mini Spool Magnets!!

OH MY GOSH! These are totally adorable! I'm totally CASEing this!
ReplyDeletevery cute! I redid some magnets a few years ago and tossed the ugly ones as well... then I got carried away and now I have have 100+ cute handmade ones. I have a problem, I know! Now I want those mini spools....

ReplyDeleteOh perfect! I picked up a while jar of empty thread spools last summer and haven't done anything with them yet.
ReplyDeleteI have a basket full of regular size old spools. I think I'm going to see if my husband can cut them in half so they are flat on the back and then put the twine on the front. This would help cut the weight of bigger spools. Thanks for the tip, love the twine!
ReplyDeleteThis is an adorable idea and they make super cute magnets. Hugs- Glora
